If your air conditioner’s working overtime and your energy bill’s starting to creep higher than home prices in 2021, I wanna help. I see it every year around this time as I’m out touring homes. I often think to myself. Man, you’re just wasting money! Start with the basics, swap out your air filters! I know, boring. But a clean filter helps your system run smoother and cheaper. I’m also going to let you in on a pro tip I’ve heard from multiple HVAC contractors. Buy the cheap filters and just change more often. The expensive ones can actually work too good and cause more strain on your unit. Especially in the heat of the summer! Close the blinds during peak sun, especially on south-facing windows! No one but the dog needs that heat blasting through the windows! And if you’re heading out, bump the thermostat up a bit. No reason to chill an empty house. Skip using the oven or dryer during the heat of the day. Running them at night can help some when possible. Selling soon? Buyers notice when a house feels efficient. They don’t want a hot box so you may have to plan on paying more to keep ALL showings at a comfortable level. But living in it? These few tweaks can save you some cash.
