October is a good month for a little home reset.
The weather is starting to cool down, the holidays are getting closer, and before you know it, the calendar will be full of school events, family gatherings, football games and holiday plans.
So instead of waiting until Thanksgiving week to realize there are 47 things around the house you’ve been meaning to do, October is a great time to knock out a few of the little things.
Here are seven I’d put on the list.
1. Change your air filters
It’s easy to forget about them, especially when the weather is bouncing between hot and cool.
Take a look at your HVAC filters and replace them if they’re dirty or overdue.
It’s a small task, but a good one to get back on a regular schedule.
2. Walk around the outside of your house
You don’t need a clipboard and a contractor’s license.
Just take a slow walk around your property.
Look for:
- Loose or damaged shingles
- Cracks or gaps around doors and windows
- Standing water
- Clogged gutters
- Dead branches
- Areas where water isn’t draining the way it should
You’re simply looking for anything that might become a bigger headache later.
3. Get the front entry ready for guests
This is one of those things that makes a bigger difference than you might expect.
Sweep the porch.
Clean the front door.
Replace a burned-out lightbulb.
Add a simple seasonal wreath or a couple of pumpkins if that’s your thing.
You don’t need to completely redecorate your front porch. Just make it feel welcoming.
4. Check the guest bathroom
Even if you aren’t hosting anyone yet, it’s worth doing a quick reset.
Make sure the toilet is working properly, the faucet isn’t dripping, the lightbulbs work and there’s plenty of hand soap.
And if you’ve got a bathroom that’s been on your “we really need to fix that” list for six months…
This might be your sign.
5. Look at your lighting
The days are getting shorter, which means you’ll notice those dark corners a lot more.
Walk through your house after sunset and see what could use better lighting.
A brighter bulb, a lamp or a small fixture can make a room feel completely different.
6. Clean out one annoying space
Notice I didn’t say organize the entire house.
Pick one space.
The pantry.
The coat closet.
The garage shelf.
The kitchen junk drawer.
The cabinet everyone is afraid to open.
Spend 30 minutes on it and call it a win.
You don’t need to become a minimalist before Thanksgiving.
7. Make a short “before the holidays” list
This might be the most important one.
Write down the things you know you’ll want done before family or friends come over.
Then separate them into three categories:
Must do: Things that actually need attention.
Would be nice: Projects that would improve things but aren’t urgent.
Not happening: Things you’re giving yourself permission to ignore.
That last category is important.
Your house does not need to be perfect for people to enjoy being there.
The goal isn’t to spend the next two months working on your house.
It’s to take care of the things that will make the next few months easier—and then actually enjoy them.
So grab your coffee, take a walk around your house this weekend and see what jumps out at you.
You might be surprised how much you can get done in an afternoon.
And if your list turns into a much bigger project than you expected, that’s what professionals are for. Don’t be afraid to ask for help before a small problem becomes an expensive one.
