We Need to Talk About the Big Light

I’m going to say something a little controversial…

Not every light in your home needs to be on. And specifically—the big light- We don’t always need it.

You know the one.

The overhead light that instantly makes everything feel a little too bright, a little too harsh, and somehow less cozy than it was five seconds ago.

Warm Light vs. Cool Light (Why It Matters)

Lighting actually has a bigger impact on how your home feels than most people realize.

Cool lighting (bright white / blue tones):

• Feels clean and bright

• Great for task-focused areas (kitchens, bathrooms)

• Can sometimes feel a little stark or clinical

Warm lighting (soft yellow tones):

• Feels relaxed and inviting

• Creates a cozy, lived-in atmosphere

• Makes spaces feel more comfortable and layered

A Simple Shift That Changes Everything

Instead of relying on one overhead light, try layering in: • Lamps • Wall lighting • Softer bulbs

It instantly changes the feel of a space—without renovating or spending much at all.

The Way a Home Feels Matters

When people walk into a home, they don’t just notice square footage or finishes.

They notice how it feels.

Lighting is a big part of that—and it’s one of the easiest things to adjust.

So if you’ve been reaching for the big light out of habit… this is your sign to try something softer.

You might be surprised how much of a difference it makes.

And if you’re ever thinking about how to make your home feel its best—whether you’re staying or eventually selling—I’m always happy to share ideas.
