There are plenty of places around Ellis County where you can grab a quick coffee, pick up dinner or run an errand.
Downtown Waxahachie feels a little different.
Maybe it’s the brick streets. Maybe it’s the historic buildings. Maybe it’s the fact that you can park the car, get out and actually wander for a while.
Whatever it is, downtown Waxahachie has a personality that keeps people coming back.
It’s more than just a pretty courthouse square
The historic downtown district is home to restaurants, boutiques, antique shops, specialty stores and plenty of places to stop for a bite or a drink.
But I think the fun is in not having a strict agenda.
You can start with coffee and end up browsing a shop you didn’t know was there.
You can meet a friend for lunch and spend another hour walking around afterward.
Or you can simply come downtown for an event and discover a new favorite place while you’re there.
October is a particularly good time to wander
There’s a lot happening around Waxahachie this month.
The October calendar includes fall markets, live music, seasonal activities and family events. The Stampede of Speed even brings a free, family-friendly cattle drive through downtown on October 9.
Later in the month, the Crossroads of Texas GO TEXAN Country Festival takes over downtown on October 24 with more than 200 booths featuring Texas-made art, food, crafts and small businesses.
So if you’ve been saying, “We really should go check out downtown,” October gives you plenty of excuses.
My favorite way to do downtown
Don’t make it an errand.
Make it an afternoon.
Pick a coffee shop.
Walk around.
Pop into a store you’ve never been inside.
Grab lunch.
Take a few pictures.
Sit somewhere and people-watch for a few minutes.
And leave enough room in the schedule for something you didn’t plan. (Like stopping for the train!)
That’s part of the charm.
Downtown Waxahachie doesn’t require an itinerary. It’s a place where you can slow down, explore a little and see what catches your attention.
Those are some of my favorite kinds of afternoons.
When was the last time you spent an afternoon wandering around downtown Waxahachie? What is the one place you always make a point to stop? Drop it in the comments!
