There’s just something magical about historic homes in Waxahachie. The wraparound porches, intricate trim work, stained glass, original hardwood floors… it’s easy to see why Waxahachie earned the nickname “The Gingerbread City.”
On June 6–7, 2026, one of Ellis County’s most beloved traditions returns with the 56th Annual Gingerbread Trail Tour of Homes, hosted by the Ellis County Museum. Whether you love architecture, local history, interior design, or simply exploring beautiful homes, this event is absolutely worth adding to your summer plans.
What Is the Gingerbread Trail Tour of Homes?
The Gingerbread Trail began in 1968 as a community effort to celebrate and preserve Waxahachie’s incredible collection of Victorian-era architecture. Over the decades, it has grown into one of Texas’ most treasured heritage events, drawing visitors from all over the state.
This year’s tour includes six historic homes along with several iconic landmarks throughout downtown Waxahachie. Visitors will get the rare opportunity to step inside beautifully preserved homes featuring architectural styles like Craftsman, Spanish Craftsman, Cottage, and Victorian-inspired design.
Featured homes for 2026 include:
- 239 Patrick Street
- 905 W. Marvin Avenue
- 108 Farley Street
- 1109 W. Main Street
- 115 Virginia Avenue
- 1109 E. Marvin Avenue

Don’t Miss the Ghost Tour
If you love a little spooky history, the “Echoes of the Past” Ghost Tour is one of the most unique add-ons of the weekend.
Held Saturday, June 6, from 6–8 PM and again from 9–11 PM, the experience takes guests through all three stories of the historic Ellis County Museum after dark using real ghost hunting equipment. Guests will hear haunted stories tied to the former Masonic Lodge building, review paranormal evidence, and explore the museum in an entirely different way.
Even if you’re skeptical, it sounds like a seriously fun night.
More Than Beautiful Homes
One of the best parts about the Gingerbread Trail is that it’s not just about architecture — it’s about preserving local history.
Proceeds from the event directly benefit the Ellis County Museum and help fund historic preservation efforts, educational programming, and the continued storytelling of Ellis County history for future generations.
The tour also highlights several local landmarks including:
- The historic Ellis County Courthouse
- The Ellis County Museum
- The Ellis County Women’s Building
- The Ellis County Master Gardener Butterfly Garden
Want to Be Part of the Tour?
The Gingerbread Trail is also looking for volunteers to serve as docents during the event. Volunteers help welcome guests, share information inside the homes, and keep the tour running smoothly.
One of the best perks? If you volunteer for a three-hour shift, you’ll receive a free ticket to enjoy the tour yourself. It’s a great way to experience the event while supporting one of Waxahachie’s favorite traditions.
And if you stop by during the tour, you may even see Tash — my Director of Operations — serving as one of this year’s docents!
If you’re interested in volunteering, you can find more information through the Ellis County Museum and Gingerbread Trail organizers.
A Few Helpful Tips Before You Go
Because these are private historic homes, there are no public restrooms available inside any of the tour homes. Guests should plan to use the public restrooms located near the Ellis County Museum before or during the tour.
Comfortable shoes, water, and plenty of phone storage for photos are also highly recommended — trust me, you’re going to want pictures.
